Experience the sea of white blossoms! We show you the perfect e-bike route through the Altes Land – featuring the best farm cafés and photo spots.
08/02/2026

Hi there, cycling enthusiasts!
When winter finally takes its leave from the north and the Hamburg sun sends its first strong rays across the Elbe, something magical happens south of the city. Over 18 million fruit trees in the Altes Land wake up to life. It is the time of the apple blossom – a natural spectacle that you must experience from the saddle at least once in your life.
There is no more beautiful way to explore this sea of white blossoms than with a built-in tailwind. Why? Because while the Altes Land is flat, the wind along the Elbe can be treacherous.
In this guide, I will take you along on my favourite route, show you the hidden corners away from the tourist crowds, and tell you where the cake tastes best.

The Perfect Start: Into the Green by Ferry
Your tour doesn't begin in heavy city traffic, but on the water. I recommend taking the HADAG ferry 62 from Landungsbrücken or the 64 from Teufelsbrück. As soon as you roll off the boat in Finkenwerder, you will feel the change of pace. The noise of the city fades away, and the lush green of the marshland takes over.
Pro-Tip on Logistics
If you don't have your own bike rack on your car or don't want to drag your bike through the S-Bahn: We at Velory Bikes will deliver your e-bike directly to your home or your hotel in Hamburg. This way, you can start relaxed in the morning with a fully charged battery right from your doorstep to the ferry, with a high-quality e-bike ready for your adventure.
Leg 1: Across the Dyke to Jork
From Finkenwerder, always head west. The path first leads you along the Elbe. On the right, the glistening Elbe; on the left, the first fruit farms.

After just a few kilometres, you will reach the heart of the Altes Land: the municipality of Jork. Here they stand, the famous timber-framed houses with their ornate "ornamental gates" (Prunkpforten). These white gates used to be a status symbol for wealthy fruit farmers – today, they are the perfect photo opportunity for your Instagram feed.
It's worth making a short stop in Jork. Stroll through the lanes and save your appetite for a little longer – the truly quaint cafes are yet to come.
Stage 2: Right in the thick of it – the fruit orchards
Past Jork, you leave the main dyke and dive deep into the orchards. This is where the e-bike shows its true strength. While others struggle against the often gusty wind, you glide silently past the blossoming rows.
Where are the most beautiful blossoms?
The apple blossom (white-pink) usually follows shortly after the cherry blossom (pure white). Seek out the smaller farm tracks away from the main roads. Here you are often completely alone with the bees buzzing busily from blossom to blossom. The air here in May smells sweet and fresh – a true wellness experience for the senses.
Stage 3: The best places for a break
What would a tour of the Altes Land be without a generous slice of Altes Land apple cake (Altländer Apfeltorte)? Forget the large catering establishments right on the main road. I have two favourites for you:
Obsthof Lefers (Jork): An absolute highlight for connoisseurs. At this organic fruit farm, you can sit back and relax in the spacious garden. The home-baked cakes are famous far beyond the borders of Jork, and the farm shop offers a great selection of regional specialities. A perfect place to unwind before heading onwards towards Stade.
Herzapfelhof Lühs: Here, everything revolves around the apple. You can buy fantastic regional products in the farm shop and relax in the cafe. Particularly exciting: the guided tour of the "heart apple garden" (Herzapfel-Garten), where apples grow with heart symbols.
Stage 4: The way back or the extension to Stade
If your legs are still feeling good, I recommend continuing on to Stade. The Hanseatic town captivates with its medieval fish market and historic canals.
From Stade, you can either cycle back the same way – the wind usually comes from the west, so you'll have a natural tailwind on the way back – or you can take the S-Bahn (S3) back to Hamburg. Taking bicycles with you is easy outside of peak hours.

Equipment & Preparation: What you need to know
To ensure your tour is a success, here are a few practical tips:
Battery check: The tour is flat, but 50 km against a headwind drains a lot of capacity. Make sure your e-bike is equipped with at least 500 Wh. Our bikes are all equipped with state-of-the-art Bosch batteries with a long range, so you don't have to worry about finding a power socket.
Clothing: The layering principle! Even if the sun shines warmly in the Altes Land, there is always a fresh breeze blowing on the dyke. A light windbreaker belongs in every pannier.
Timing: The blossom period is short (approx. 10–14 days). Check the "blossom barometer" regularly online or simply ask us via WhatsApp – we know exactly when things are really getting started in the orchards.
Conclusion: A day's holiday for the soul
The tour through the Altes Land during the apple blossom season is pure relaxation. The white of the blossoms, the blue of the Elbe and the red of the brick houses create a backdrop that you won't forget anytime soon. It is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of Hamburg.
My tip for the perfect day: Start early, take time for the farm shops and enjoy the freedom on two wheels. If you don't want to handle the logistics yourself, we will be happy to support you: we can conveniently deliver your premium e-bike directly to your hotel or home in Hamburg and collect it again after the tour. This way, you don't have to worry about a thing and can fully concentrate on the sea of blossoms.
