Sundays in Germany are quite something. The shops are closed, Mönckebergstraße is like a ghost town, and you ask yourself: "What actually are we doing today?" If you are in Hamburg, the answer is actually quite simple: you get on your bike.
Because while the city centre sleeps, the port comes to life. Today, I'm taking you on my absolute favourite Sunday route. It combines the morning chaos of the fish market with the heavenly tranquillity of the Elbe suburbs.
The trick here: we ride "anticyclically". When the crowds of tourists arrive at the Landungsbrücken at midday, we're already sitting relaxed with a coffee on the Elbe beach.
Stop 1: The early bird catches the eel (or the coffee)
We start early. Yes, I know, it's Sunday. But trust me. The St. Pauli Fish Market (from 5:00 am in summer, from 7:00 am in winter) is an experience you only get before the big tour buses roll in.
Ride your e-bike relaxed up to Große Elbstraße. There are plenty of options there to lock your bike securely.
The vibe: A mix of night owls coming from the Reeperbahn and early birds buying fresh fruit.
Breakfast: A shrimp roll on the go or a fresh Franzbrötchen and a hot coffee in the Fish Auction Hall to live jazz.
The route: Always follow the water (approx. 15-20 km one-way)
After reinforcing ourselves, we swing into the saddles. Our destination: The west.
Stage 1: Through the "pearl necklace" to Övelgönne
We ride directly along the Elbe heading west. Past the Dockland (the building that looks like a ship's bow – if you're fit, climb the stairs for the view!) to the Museum Harbour Övelgönne.
Old traditional ships, cranes, and vessels lie here. One photogenic highlight after another. Attention: On Sundays, we often share the path here with pedestrians. With an e-bike, the rule here is: Eco mode on, fingers on the brake, and show consideration. If you want to speed, you have to detour onto Elbchaussee (but then you'll miss the view).
Stage 2: The "Alte Schwede" and the Elbe beach
Onwards towards Teufelsbrück. We pass the "Alte Schwede" (a huge glacial erratic on the beach). Here the path gets wider and you can let the motor do some work. The view of the container giants pushing their way towards the North Sea is unique from down here.
The highlight: Blankenese and the Treppenviertel (staircase quarter)
Normally, Blankenese is the ultimate opponent for cyclists. It's not called the "staircase quarter" for nothing. It goes steeply up and steeply down.
But we are sitting on e-bikes. And this is exactly the moment when you won't be able to wipe the grin off your face. While other cyclists struggle up the Waseberg (up to 16% incline!), you relaxes and switches into Turbo mode.
My tip: Don't just ride down by the water, but explore the small alleyways up on the hillside. The architecture is dreamlike – thatched cottages meet white villas.
Viewpoint: Ride up to the Süllberg. The terrace up there offers perhaps the best view over the Elbe you can get in Hamburg.
Stopover tips for Sunday
When the shops are shut, the cafés are booming. Here are my favourites along the route:
Strandperle (Övelgönne): The classic. Feet in the sand, beer or lemonade in hand. Always full, but it's part of the experience.
Kaffeegarten Schuldt (Süllberg): Traditional, cosy and with an amazing view.
Willkomm-Höft (Wedel): If you add a few more kilometres (approx. 8 km from Blankenese), you'll reach the ship welcoming station. Here, every ship is greeted with its national anthem. A bit kitsch, but very Hamburg-style.
