The Ultimate Guide
The perfect e-bike tour in and around Hamburg
Battery range, route planning or the right outfit: with our checklist, your next e-bike tour in Hamburg is guaranteed to be a success.

Hi there!
Hand on heart: is there anything better than zooming along the Elbe with a built-in tailwind, while the fresh breeze blows around your nose? E-biking has completely changed cycling in Hamburg. Suddenly, trips into the Altes Land or all the way to Lauenburg are no longer a journey around the world, but a relaxed day out.
But even with the best motor under your saddle, a tour can go wrong. A flat battery in the middle of "nowhere" (yes, that also exists in the Vierlande and Marschlande), the wrong clothing in Hamburg drizzle, or a route that is made more for mountain bikes than for trekking bikes – none of this has to be the case.
1. The route: More than just start and finish
The biggest mistake many people make: just setting off and trusting Google Maps. Great for cars, but often a disaster for e-bikes, leading you along four-lane main roads.
Apps and tools
Use specialised apps like Komoot. Here you can select "E-bike" or "Bicycle (Touring)" as your sport. This ensures that you stay on paved or well-surfaced paths and do not suddenly find yourself ankle-deep in mud.
The Hamburg wind factor
Up here in the north, we almost always have wind. And it usually comes from the west.
Pro-tip: Plan your route so that you ride against the wind on the way out (when you are still fresh) and let the wind (plus motor) push you on the way back. Nothing is more frustrating than fighting against force 5 winds with a declining battery level.
2. Battery management: No need to panic about range
"How far will that actually get me?" That is the question I hear most often here at Velory. The answer is a classic "It depends". The range depends on four factors:
Assistance level: If you ride in "Turbo" mode constantly, you will drain the battery faster than in "Eco" mode.
Weight: Rider weight plus luggage.
Topography: Even if Hamburg seems flat – the Harburg Hills or the Geesthang slope drain energy.
Wind and ground surface: Soft sandy ground or headwind are energy guzzlers.
Realistic planning
With a standard battery (500Wh to 625Wh), assume a realistic range of 60 to 80 kilometres for mixed riding.
Eco
Long distances, tailwind, flat countryside
100+ km
Tour
The standard mode for relaxed riding
60 - 80 km
Sport/Turbo
Climbs (e.g. Kösterberg), strong headwind
40 - 50 km
*Values may vary depending on motor and conditions.
3. Clothing & equipment: The onion principle is a must
Hamburg is beautiful, but when it comes to the weather... moody. We can have bright sunshine and a heavy downpour within 20 minutes.
Onion look: Wear several thin layers on top of each other. When riding, you get warm from the movement, but the wind cools you down faster. A windproof gilet or jacket is worth its weight in gold.
Rain protection: A light rain jacket always belongs in your pannier. Always.
Sun protection: Do not underestimate the sun. Because of the wind, you often do not notice how strongly it is burning.
4. Logistics: Starting point and arrival
Hamburg is big. If you want to start in the west (e.g. Wedel) but live in Wandsbek, you have an hour's journey through city traffic first. This eats up battery and nerves.
Public transport and e-bikes
The S-Bahn takes bicycles (outside peak times!), but watch out: many stations have no lifts or broken ones. Carrying a 25 kg e-bike up the stairs is no fun. The HVV ferries (line 62 or 72), on the other hand, are super bike-friendly and offer you a mini harbour tour at the same time.
The relaxed alternative
Why stress before the tour even starts? This is where our Velory delivery concept comes into play. We bring the e-bikes directly to your starting point – whether it is your hotel, your home or right next to the dyke.
5. Safety and technical check
Before you roll off, take two minutes for the "quick check":
Tyre pressure: E-bike tyres usually need between 3 and 4 bar. Too little air pressure costs range and makes the ride feel spongy.
Brakes: Test the brakes while stationary. E-bikes are heavier, so the brakes need to grab tightly.
Chain: A drop of oil works wonders for the noise level. (Don't worry, our rental bikes always come to you freshly serviced).
6. Catering: The motor needs electricity, you need Franzbrötchen
Do not underestimate hunger. Even with the motor helping, you are burning calories.
Water: Have at least 1.5 litres per person with you.
Snacks: Nuts or bars for in-between.
Stopping for a bite: Plan breaks. On the Elbe, there are classics like the Zollenspieker Fährhaus. But watch out: on sunny weekends, it is very busy there.
Conclusion: Preparation is half the battle
An e-bike tour through Hamburg and the surrounding region is an experience you won't forget in a hurry – if the preparation is right. With the right battery management, suitable clothing and a clever route, nothing stands in the way of your enjoyment.
